Some History -- This summary deals only with the expansion program into helicopters. During 1984, McDonnell Douglas purchased Hughes Helicopters from the Summa Corporation. The deal cost McDonnell Douglas $500 million for the company, which was renamed the McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company. The following year (1985) the named changed to McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems in 1985. McDonnell Douglas Helicopters's most successful product was the Hughes designed AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. The range of helicopters produced to are the AH-64 Apache (started under Hughes Helicopters), the MD 500 series (again started under Hughes Helicopters), the MD 600 and the MD 901/902/902 Explorer.
