Some History -- The orginal company was founded in 1935 by Lawarence Dale Bell and called the Bell Aircraft Company. The early years saw Bell manufacturing military fighter aircraft. Lawrence Bell made a decision to enter the helicopter market in 1941 when he hoped that the introduction of a broader economic base would strengthen the company by not having to rely on fickle government contracts. Bell hired the talented Arthur M. Young to set up an research and development section for helicopters. In late 1942 the the full sized Bell 30 took to the air. Continuing work on the R&D programme led to the B47 becoming the first helicopter rated by theCAA. The B47 became a military and civilian success.
In the intervening years the Bell Aircraft Company became the Bell Aerospace company and was composed of three divisions of which the Bell Helicopter Company was one division. Textron aquired Bell Aerospace in 1960 and the helicopter division was renamed to Bell Helicopter Compamy. With the success of the UH-1 (Huey), during the Vietnam war, the Bell Helicopter Company established itself as the largest division of Textron. In eartly 1976 Textron changed the name of the compamy again tp Bell Helicopter Textron.
Bell Helicopter Textron now have close associations with AugustaWestland. The parterships have separate manufacturing and technology agreements. To date more than 35,000 aircraft have been manufactured for world wide use.
